Inducted into the South African Hall of Fame – 15 October 2025

Johan Fourie is one of South Africa’s most iconic middle-distance runners, best known for his blistering speed, unmatched consistency, and unwavering resilience during an era marked by international sporting isolation.

Born on 2 December 1959, in Springs, Gauteng, Fourie rose to prominence in the 1980s, consistently recording sub-4-minute miles – breaking the mark an astonishing 49 times. In fact, he was widely regarded by international analysts as the world’s best miler never allowed to compete on the global stage due to apartheid-era bans.

His unofficial time of 3:33.87 in the 1500m, set in 1987, would have placed him among the world’s best. 

Fourie’s legacy endures not only in the record books but in the hearts of South Africans who were inspired by his unrelenting pursuit of excellence, even when the world wasn’t watching.
