Born on 14 March 1963 in Cape Town, Dr. Desiree Ellis is a true icon of South African football, both as a player and coach. A founding member of Banyana Banyana, she made her debut as vice-captain in 1993, leading the team in their early years. As a player, Dr. Ellis captained South Africa to a runner-up finish at the 2000 African Women’s Championship and a COSAFA Cup victory in 2002, earning numerous accolades along the way. After retiring in 2002, Dr. Ellis transitioned to coaching, becoming head coach of Banyana Banyana in 2016. Under her leadership, the team achieved historic success, including a second-place finish at the 2018 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, which secured South Africa’s first-ever Women’s World Cup spot. In 2022, she led the team to their first-ever WAFCON title, and in 2023, Dr. Ellis guided Banyana Banyana to the knockout rounds of the Women’s World Cup for the first time. Recognized as one of Africa’s top coaches, Dr. Ellis has won CAF Women’s Coach of the Year four times (2018, 2019, 2022, 2023), and in 2023, she was awarded the National Order of Ikhamanga for her outstanding contributions to football. Her legacy, both on and off the pitch, continues to inspire future generations of women in sport. In 2024, Dr Desiree Ellis was conferred with an honorary Doctorate by the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, in recognition of her remarkable contributions to women’s football and her dedication to empowering future generations of players and coaches.

Inducted into the South African Hall of Fame in 2024, Dr. Desiree Ellis remains a trailblazer, empowering young South Africans to dream big and break barriers.
