Inducted into the South African Hall of Fame – 15 October 2025

De Villiers Lamprecht holds a special place in South African athletics history as a trailblazer and national icon of speed. Born on 22 December 1942, Lamprecht made athletics history on 13th November 1964 when he became the first South African to run the mile under four minutes.

His breakthrough performance in the 1960s electrified the nation and opened the doors for generations of sprinters to follow. As a white Afrikaner excelling in track during a complex time in South African history, Lamprecht’s achievements became a symbol of aspiration and possibility.

But his legacy extends far beyond the stopwatch. Known for his humility, mentorship, and love of the sport, De Villiers Lamprecht later served as a coach and ambassador for athletics in South Africa, pouring his passion into developing future champions. De Villiers passed away on 1 December 2024.

His induction into the South African Hall of Fame celebrates not only a historic sprint, but a lifetime dedicated to uplifting the sport and its athletes.
