Finishing the year is its own kind of strength
Thoughts on pressure, purpose, and rising anyway
It’s the final stretch of the year and for many of us, it’s the hardest part.
Exam season, deadlines, budgets, holiday planning and performance reviews. School runs, year-end calendars, and the never-ending task of holding everything together.
It’s a time when the pace picks up, but energy runs low. And yet, this is also when the work beneath the surface starts to matter most. It’s no longer about motivation. It’s about intention.
The stories behind the spotlight
At the South African Hall of Fame, we’ve just honoured a group of football legends who shaped South African sport: Phil Masinga, Clive Barker, Aaron Mokoena, Janine van Wyk, Mark Fish, Mark Williams, and Doctor Khumalo.
These names are known for their victories, but their greatness was built in the moments when no one was watching. They didn’t rise because they always had momentum. They rose because they kept moving through doubt, fatigue, and pressure. They stayed connected to their purpose, even when the path wasn’t easy.
Finding your why when it matters most
During a recent address, Varsha Vala, Principal Officer of Medihelp Medical Scheme, one of our valued partners, shared a personal reflection that captured the heart of what keeps us going.
“When I think of having an edge,” she said, “I don’t go to strategy documents or leadership manuals. I go back to our family dinner table, and something my father told us: ‘Remember why you do what you do.’ That simple truth has stayed with me ever since. It reminds me that understanding your ‘why’ – and caring for every part of your wellbeing – is what gives you courage when things get hard. It’s what helps you rise when giving up would be easier.”
“Knowing why your work matters, and understanding the bigger picture of your purpose and values on yourself and those around you, is what gives you the courage to keep going when things get hard.”
According to Varsha, it’s a quiet strength. A reminder that resilience doesn’t begin when the challenge hits. It begins long before, in the choices we make about what truly matters and the lens through which we view ourselves.
Not all ambition looks the same
That’s the kind of ambition we honour at the South African Hall of Fame. The kind rooted in purpose, not ego. In consistency, not applause.
Wherever you find yourself at this time of year, behind a desk, in a classroom, or at home juggling it all, remember that ambition comes in many forms. And sometimes, the most courageous thing you can do is to simply keep showing up while prioritising your self care.
A quiet reminder to keep going
So take a breath.
Reflect.
Rest.
Choose one small thing to carry forward.
Because even legends had seasons where they felt stretched thin. And still – they rose.
Your purpose matters. So does your wellbeing.
